New contender in the market; The GTX 1660 Super !!!

Are you looking for a new card for your Gaming Rig and confused which one to choose from? Do you think GTX 1660 is not been able to hold up for your gaming needs and GTX 1660ti is too costly? Nvidia just solved this issue by filling the narrow gap between 1660 and 1660ti with GTX 1660 super.

Nvidia just recently launched the GTX 1660 super, another member in its Turing architecture family.
The company claims it is 20% faster than the GTX 1660 and 1.5x faster than previous generation GTX 1060. Based on the same TU116 GPU as that of 1660 and 1660ti, the super variant is now featuring the same 1408 CUDA cores as the base 1660. The most significant difference between the base variant and the super variant is the raise of memory type from GDDR5 to GDDR6 which results in the raise in memory speed from 8Gbps to 14Gbps.

The full specification GTX 1660 super is:

  • GPU Name: TU116
  • GPU Variant: TU116-300-A1
  • Architecture: Turing
  • Foundry: TSMC
  • Process Size: 12nm
  • Transistors: 6,600 million
  • Die Size: 284 mm²
  • Base Clock: 1530 MHz
  • Boost Clock: 1785 MHz
  • Memory Clock: 1750 MHz (14000 MHz effective)
  • Memory Size: 6 GB
  • Memory Type: GDDR6
  • Memory Bus: 192 bit
  • Bandwidth: 336.0 GB/s
  • Shader Units: 1408
  • TMUs: 88
  • ROPs: 48
  • SM Count: 22
  • L1 Cache: 64 KB (per SM)
  • L2 Cache: 1536
  • TDP: 125 W
  • DirectX: 12.0 (12_1)
  • OpenGL: 4.6
  • OpenCL: 1.2
  • Vulkan: 1.1.124
  • CUDA: 7.5
  • Shader Model: 6.4
This GPU doesn't feature RT or Tensor cores, which means while you technically can enable Ray Tracing on this card but doing so will result in a huge performance loss. So, keep that in mind.

Performance In Real Life

On paper, the GTX 1660 super seems just like the base variant with only one improvement and that is in Memory speed. But that small difference made the biggest difference in real-life performance. When paired with a  decent processor the GTX 1660 super nearly matches the performance of its bigger brother i.e GTX 1660ti.

The graph below shows the performance differences among the 1660 family:

Price in India

The GTX 1660 Super in India currently costs between Rs. 18k - Rs.23k according to different OEMs and models. Comparatively the prices of GTX 1660ti is Rs. 24k onwards and that of GTX 1660 is Rs.16.5k - 19k. At this price, the GTX 1660 Super is absolute value for money!
