AMD at CES 2020: Everything you need to know.

As the biggest and only competitor of Intel, AMD is just doing a fine job in overtaking the market of microprocessors since the launch of Ryzen Architecture. This year in CES, AMD begins the decade with some exciting launches that everyone was waiting for.

The Zen 2 Based mobile APUs

Last year AMD launched their CPUs based on 7nm Zen 2 Architecture and till date, it is the best architecture the industry has to offer. Well, this year the company extended the Zen 2 family by announcing the 4000 'U'-series, 'H'-series and the Pro-series laptop processors based on 7nm Zen 2 Architecture. Lisa Su started by showing off the new Ryzen 7 4800U which will be coming with 8 cores 16 threads, 1.8Ghz base clock and 4.2Ghz boost clock and 8 Radeon cores for graphics all in 15W TDP. She also compares the processor with the Intel 10th gen i7 1065G7 and to be honest the chip holds up quite well.

According to Lisa, the Ryzen 7 4800U is twice the power-efficient comparing it to the competition resulting in the better battery life of the laptops. She also confirms that devices with Ryzen 4000 series processors will be available from Q1 of 2020.

The FreeSync Echosystem

AMD expands its adaptive refresh-rate technology by announcing the FreeSync Ecosystem with products that cover price-points from $89 to $4000. These products will now be classified into three different categories:
  • AMD FreeSync: This will be the normal basic technology and will cover displays of 60hz to 75hz.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium: This will cover all the displays with refresh-rate of 120hz and higher and will support Low Framerate Compensation (LFC).
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Pro: This will add HDR support to all displays with refresh-rate of 120hz and higher and will also support Low Framerate Compensation (LFC).

RX 5600 Series

Alongside Ryzen, AMD is also currently prospering on their RDNA architecture for GPUs. On stage, the company revealed a new member in its Navi family i.e the new 5600 series discrete GPUs.
AMD announces the RX 5600 XT which will be coming with the following specs:
  • 36 Compute Units
  • The clock of 1375 Mhz that AMD calls Game Clock
  • Boost Clock of 1560 Mhz
  • 6GB of GDDR6 memory
AMD compares it with the GTX 1660 Ti and it seems to have little better performance than Nvidia's model. But it's too early too judge given AMD only uses three games in the presentation graph and the real-world scenario might be different. This card will be available in different variants from different OEMs and AMD confirms that the cards will be available from January 21st and will be priced around $279.

The company also announces that 5600M and 5700M will be the next notebook GPUs that will be coming in 1st Half of 2020.

AMD SmartShift

Portable personal computer like laptops has a very limited power supply. That is the reason why AMD introduced us to their new technology called SmartShift in this CES.

According to AMD:
"AMD SmartShift technology dynamically shifts power in your system to boost performance for the task at hand to get an extra performance whether you are playing a game, rendering or editing videos. AMD SmartShift enables Ryzen and Radeon configured laptops to deliver outstanding performance in exceptional notebook form factors."

AMD claims to achieve 10% performance improvement on Division 2 with this technology.

The 64 core HEDT processor

AMD preserved one of the most exciting launches of CES for the last. They announced the 3rd gen 7nm Ryzen Threadripper 3990X which is the world's first 64 core desktop processor. This massive processor comes with:
  • 64 cores
  • 128 threads
  • base clock of 2.9Ghz
  • boost clock of 4.3Ghz
  • 4MB of L1 cache
  • 32MB of L2 cache
  • 256MB of L3 cache
This CPU completely crushes the current Intel's Dual Xeon Platinum 8280 of price $20k and it only costs $3,990. AMD claims that this CPU is 30% faster than the rival's Xeon platform.
